Bald Cypress
The bald cypress is a deciduous tree that is found growing near rivers and creeks and in swamps. According to the University of Florida, bald cypress trees can live up to 600 years. These are quite tall trees, growing up to 100 to 150 feet in height. The bald cypress is found in the southern portion of the United States, near the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Old bald cypress trees are typically covered with Spanish moss. The bald cypress is a very slow growing tree, so it is not used by the lumber industry.
Leyland Cypress Trees
The Leyland cypress is a hybrid tree that is created from the Monterey cypress and Alaskan cedar. The Leyland cypress does not occur naturally on its own. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, this fast-growing evergreen is one of the most popular types of tree used as Christmas trees in the southeastern portion of the country. The tree is named for C.J. Leyland who discovered an accidentally crossbreeding in 1888. Leyland cypresses can grow quite tall and are known to withstand very cold temperatures.
Arizona Cypress
The Arizona cypress is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 60 feet in height. According to Desert-Tropicals.com, the Arizona cypress comes from its namesake state and is known for its minimal watering requirements. Though it it is found naturally on rocky slopes and walls of canyons, the Arizona cypress grows well when used in gardens. It grows best in dry climates that get full sunlight. This a good tree for people who have little time to dedicate to garden maintenance.
