Varieties of Lily Flowers

Lilies are some of the most popular of all flowers, particularly in the spring. Lilies are very low maintenance with regard to ease of growth, and they come in a variety of colors and varieties. As a result, fans of the lily have a multitude of choices when it comes to selecting lilies for their garden, special occasions or gift giving.

Stargazer lilies, perhaps one of the most striking of all lily varieties, are known for their richly scented and colorful blooms. Although the stargazer lily was only created in the later part of the 20th century, it has quickly become one of the most popular and sought after of all of the lily varieties. Its blooms, which can range in color from pure white to deep pink, are often used in celebration bouquets or formal arrangements. For best growth results, stargazer lilies, as with most lilies, are best planted in the fall in all regions due to the coolness of the soil.

Peruvian lilies, native to South America, have grown in popularity from far beyond their land of its origin. Peruvian lilies come in a variety of colors, including striking shades of yellow, pink, orange and white. Boasting multiple blooms for each stem, Peruvian lilies are popular choices in full vase arrangements for gift giving and are often used in decor for formal events. For gift giving, their meaning is that of friendship and devotion. The USDA recommends planting Peruvian lilies in the fall in all regions for optimum growth.

Magic lilies, which were grown in Japan for thousands of years, were first introduced to America during the 1800s. Magic lilies, sometimes referred to as surprise lilies due to their propensity to grow in the late summer month of August, produce a pale pink, almost white bloom. One of the easiest of all of the lilies to grow, magic lilies do well in most any average garden soil and will thrive in either full or partial shade. As a result, Magic Lilies can be planted along with other lilies in the fall.
