Ilex crenata, also known as Japanese holly, is an evergreen shrub used in gardens and outdoor landscaping because it is low maintenance. With a little sunlight and moist soil, this shrub will thrive and grow year after year. Since Japanese holly have thick, dense foliage, it is safe to prune often to help these shrubs maintain a desired shape. Varieties of Japanese holly include Dwarf Pagoda, Convexa, Kingsville Green Cushion, Compacta and Helleri.
Dwarf Pagoda
The Dwarf Pagoda sits low to the ground and produces tiny black berries. The shiny, green leaves are small and oval shaped. This type of Japanese holly blooms in late spring to early summer and requires partial shade to full sun exposure in order to grow. Water this shrub regularly helps maintain moist soil. The dwarf pagoda may be planted in a garden, rock garden or landscape slope.
Convexa
The height of this type of Japanese holly is typically between 6 to 8 feet and 4 to 6 feet wide. The leaves appear blackish green with purple stems. Small green flowers that attract bees are common. Convexa can thrive in partial shade to full sunlight exposure and needs to be kept in soil that is moist.
Kingsville Green Cushion
The Kingsville Green Cushion grows low to the ground with spreading branches. This type of Japanese holly produces black, white or yellow berries and small, green leaves. This shrub is considered poisonous to animals. The Kingsville Green Cushion blooms in late spring and early summer and thrives in moist soil in partial shade or full sunlight.
Compacta
This Japanese Holly grows between 3 to 5 feet in height. Its flat leaves are dark green. Compacta does not produce berries or flowers. To grow the shrubs, place them in partial shade to full sunlight and provide enough water to keep the soil moist. Like other varieties of Japanese holly, Compacta is considered a good foundation plant for gardens and other outdoor landscaping because it is low maintenance.
Helleri
Helleri grows low to the ground and produces small green leaves. Small white flowers that attract bees are common when in bloom. This type of Japanese Holly grows between 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. To help the shrub thrive, plant in partial shade or full sunlight and provide moist soil.
