PVC pipe is an inexpensive and flexible material that presents a number of uses for gardeners. PVC pipe is highly weather resistant and can be used in landscaping projects such as building gates, pens or other barriers. PVC pipe can also be used in projects that help a garden and its plants thrive, such as making a greenhouse or building trellises.
In any of these projects, you can paint or decorate the PVC pipe in a variety of ways, to make it an appealing and effective addition to a garden and the surrounding area.
PVC Pipe Greenhouse
You can use PVC pipe to build a support structure for a garden greenhouse, especially those of a temporary or mobile nature. PVC pipe greenhouses work well with a plastic- or fabric-lined cover, which in turn covers young crops that might otherwise get damaged by the outside weather, such as by frost.
PVC greenhouses can also help extend the growing season of plants. To make the PVC pipe greenhouses more permanent use strong, UV-resistant plastic- and weather-resistant wood to help support the greenhouse. This type of greenhouse can last for many seasons, especially if built on a concrete foundation or directly in the ground.
PVC Pipe Hydroponic Planters
By sealing the ends with a watertight sealant, PVC pipe can be used for hydroponic gardening. You can either drill single-plant sized holes in the top section of the PVC pipe or remove the top section entirely. A pump is necessary to push water and fertilizer through the pipe and to the plant roots.
To help the PVC pipe hydroponic planters better absorb heat, paint the outside of the pipes black. If you have multiple levels of hydroponic planters you can add overflows to the ends of each pipe to allow for continuous water flow through all sections. Placing buckets of water and fertilizer on the ground can act as a reservoir to capture overflow fluids.
PVC Pipe Arbor
PVC pipe can make a very strong and supportive structure on which to grow plants. Create a lattice effect by laying out the pipe in a crisscross style. Depending on the type of plant and the type of look you are going for, you can space the pipes far apart or close together. To secure the PVC pipe structure screw the pipes to one another to help keep them in place.
To go one step further and make an arched arbor, use elbow connectors and flexible PVC pipe. Add chicken wire or standard lattice material to a PVC pipe arbor to add strength to the structure and provide extra support and area for plants to grow.
