Moles are solitary insectivores that live in underground burrows and tunnels, coming to the surface only rarely. They play a beneficial role in the management of soil and also help to limit the number of harmful insects and grubs in the area. Ground moles, however, can damage property, especially if there is a large population of moles in a single area. Moles can create unsightly tunnels and hills that mar the landscape as well as make mowing more difficult. When in comes to eliminating moles, there are three types of traps that work best.
Scissor Traps
As its name implies, this type of trap utilizes scissor-like jaws that snap shut across the tunnel as the mole passes through. The trap requires that a portion of the mole’s runway be excavated, with the jaws straddling the sides of the tunnel and the trigger pan resting upon the bottom. For the trap to work most effectively, a straight portion of the runway should be used, making sure that the mole will travel directly between the scissor jaws.
Spear Traps
Once again, the name of this trap is indicative of its killing action. This trap uses metal spikes that impale the mole as it crosses over the trigger pan. Probably the easiest of all mole traps to use, the spear trap should be set on tunnels that are known to be active. After it is set, the trap should be tested to ensure that the spikes will travel through the soil, all the way into the tunnel. While the scissor traps work best in deeper tunnels, spear-style traps should be utilized in more shallow tunnels.
Choker Traps
This type of trap employs a loop that tightens around the mole’s body as it passes through the tunnel, choking it. In order to use this trap, it is necessary to dig across the tunnel, making it a little wider and deeper in the area where you wish to set the trap. Position it so that the loop encircles the tunnel. Fill the excavated portion with loose soil and cover the tunnel so that light cannot enter.
