Mosquito Barrier is a mosquito repellent that can be a bit pricey and is sometimes difficult to obtain. Learning to make your own mosquito barrier will save you time, money and frustration while protecting yourself and your family with safe and environmentally friendly products. With the number of oils available to make your homemade mosquito barrier, you can choose those that work the best for you and also are readily available in your area.
Essential Oils
There are many essential oils that repel mosquitoes and are suitable for use as a homemade mosquito barrier. Garlic oil is known to repel mosquitoes and is even effective in those who routinely consume large amounts of garlic as a part of their diet. Other essential oils include peppermint, feverfew, basil, onion, eucalyptus, lemon balm, rosemary and geranium. Check with your physician before using essential oils on small children or pregnant women.
Vegetable Oil
Vegetable oil makes up the bulk of homemade mosquito barriers. Select an inexpensive vegetable oil with little or no scent. Choose cooking vegetable oils like canola or sunflower oil. Avoid oils made of or including peanut oil as many people have dangerous allergies to peanuts and their byproducts.
Recipe
Add 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice to two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Shake well to blend the two oils together. Make larger batches of your homemade mosquito barrier by using approximately one part essential oil to 10 parts vegetable oil. Reduce the vegetable oil and increase the essential oil to strengthen your homemade mosquito barrier or reduce the essential oil and increase the vegetable oil to weaken it, depending on your specific needs.
Dosage
Dip your finger into your homemade mosquito barrier and dab it on your wrists, elbows and neck. If you're wearing shorts, dab some on your knees and ankles. When hiking or working in tall grasses or near standing and stagnant water, mist your clothing to further repel the mosquitoes. Reapply hourly or immediately after swimming.
Storage
Store your homemade mosquito barrier in a glass bottle. The bottle should be dark or it needs to be stored in a dark location like a closet or cabinet. The oils break down quickly when exposed to heat, so avoid storing your homemade mosquito barrier in your kitchen. Select a hall or linen closet where the temperature, humidity and light level remain consistent.
