Making a spray from peppermint oil can help control insect infestations, and may help keep insects from biting humans.
Mosquito Repellent
Making a spray from peppermint oil can help repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are biting pests that cause intense itching and sometimes swelling at the bite site. Some mosquitoes can transmit dangerous viruses through their saliva, such as encephalitis. Insect repellents do not kill mosquitoes, but keep them from landing on the skin and biting. When making your own peppermint spray, combine 10-percent citronella oil with 2-percent peppermint oil and place it in a spray bottle. Spray on the skin before going outdoors and reapply if necessary for continued mosquito control.
Ant Control
Ants are often a nuisance when they come indoors. These insects are usually small and are red or black in color. Ants often bite humans and may infest food indoors. Keep ants outdoors where they belong by making a spray out of peppermint oil. According to Oregon State University, the most effective peppermint spray for ant control is 1 part peppermint oil to 10 parts water. Place the mixture in a spray bottle and spray where ants are coming inside your home. Reapply as necessary for continued control.
