Varieties
There are several varieties of yellow watermelon, each with traits of its own. Yellow Baby and Yellow Doll are both hybrids that mature in less than 75 days. A longer maturing variety is the Honey Heart, with about 85 days between planting and melon maturity. In each case, the yellow watermelons are small, averaging about 8 lbs.
That Yellow Color
The yellow color is the result of carotenoids. Carotenoid is a pigment that occurs in plants such as yellow apples, carrots, citrus fruit and yellow peppers, as well as yellow watermelon.
Health Benefits
Foods rich in carotenoids are often linked to benefits in eye health in general and age-related macular degeneration in particular. All watermelon are fat-free, making them a part of law fat diet that reduces risks associated with heart health problems and some cancers.
Growing Yellow Watermelon
Plant any watermelon after the last chance of frost has passed in the spring. Watermelon is a warm season crop and thrives in temperatures of about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Using black plastic mulch over the soil increases the temperatures around the plant and can help the yellow watermelon flourish. Harvest the yellow watermelon when the curly stem near the place where the melon attaches to the vine dries. At this time, the watermelon should also make a dull thump when rapped with knuckles.
