Whenever you are digging a garden or new flowerbed, you usually run into into of those little white grubs. They never seem to be moving around and often are not even seen as any type of pest. This is actually something you need to be concerned with. These small creatures can destroy a beautiful lawn in two different ways.
What are They
The small white grubs that you are digging up in your yard are the larval state of various species of beetle, primarily the June bug. If you have a large amount of June bugs continually hanging around lights at night, then there is a possibility that you have an infestation of the grubs in your lawn. June bugs are 3/4-inch brown beetles. They have a very hard shell and are slow and clumsy fliers.
Food
Grub worms are very destructive to lawns in large numbers. These little creature thrive on the roots of turf grasses. They begin to move when the soil becomes warm. This varies depending on your location. The creatures will move close to the roots and then eat the roots of turf grasses. Grasses such as fescue, bluegrass, Bermuda and rye are susceptible to this voracious larvae.
Signs of White Grubworms
There are couple of ways to tell if you have a problem with grub-worms in your lawn. You can dig up the yard, but this can cause just as much damage as the larvae. If you have small circular spots of grass dying in your yard for no reason, then there is a possibility that you have grub worms. The grubs will actually kill the grass as the destroy the roots and work outward from a central point. Another telltale sign is a sudden appearance of moles in your yard. Moles will eat grub worms but also do a tremendous amount of damage to the lawn.
Eliminating Grub Worms
Grub worms are destructive to the lawn. You can eliminate them by applying diazinon to the lawn. Diazinon will not kill the lawn, but will leech into the soil and kill the grubs. It is a granular poison and is applied by using a drop-spreader. Check the package you purchase for the settings of the spreader. The interesting part about the elimination of the white grub worms is the disappearance of moles. Once the food source is gone, the moles will then move on to find another source of food.
