How Organic Zinc Primers Prevent Corrosion
Organic zinc primers prevent corrosion by creating a barrier that cannot be penetrated by moisture. The electrical properties of zinc form this protective barrier.
Why They Are Used
Organic zinc primers are used underneath a primary layer of paint or epoxy as a secondary means of preventing corrosion from forming on a metal surface.
Organic Vs. Inorganic Zinc Primers
Inorganic zinc primers need to be sprayed onto a surface. They do not require a topcoat of paint or epoxy. Organic zinc primers may be applied using a brush or roller. They are less effective than inorganic zinc primers at protecting steel if they are not top coated.
Application on a Steel Surface
The metal surface the organic zinc primer is being applied to should first be treated with a salt remover. A solvent based top coat of epoxy or paint should be applied after the application of the organic zinc primer.
Cost
Organic zinc primer costs roughly 60 cents per square foot. The total cost of covering a surface area with organic zinc primer depends upon the square footage of the area.
