Knowing the fastest ways to get rid of fleas indoors helps you take back your home quickly.
Cleaning
Cleaning your home is an effective way to kill fleas. Vacuum your home daily, paying attention to the areas under and behind furniture. Use a crevice attachment to clean along baseboards and in between couch cushions. Vacuum upholstered furniture and carpets. This sucks up the fleas. Discard the vacuum contents into a zip-top bag and discard the bag outside. Steam clean the carpets with hot water to kill the fleas. This removes the fleas from your home and kills them.
Laundry
Use the heat of the washer and dryer to kill the fleas. Wash all linens, curtains and pet bedding weekly. Use the highest heat setting possible in both the washer and dryer. The fleas that survive drowning in the wash will die in the heat of the dryer.
Grooming
Brushing your pets daily with a petroleum jelly-covered flea comb pulls the fleas off them. Drop the fleas into a soapy cup of water to drown them. Bathe your pet weekly using your favorite flea shampoo to kill more fleas and prevent future infestations.
Topical Flea Treatments
Monthly, apply a topical flea treatment to your pet following the packages instructions. Speak to your vet about the best topical treatments for your pet. The treatments usually kill fleas within 24 hours. Although directions vary, most require you to squeeze the liquid between your pet's shoulder blades.
Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is ground-up microscopic marine fossils. The sharp edges on the powder cuts open the outer covering of the fleas, causing them to dehydrate and die. Sprinkle the powder on your floors and furniture. After several hours, vacuum the powder up and discard the contents in a zip-top bag.
Traps
Placing flea traps in carpeted rooms catches and kills fleas overnight. Fill a dish with water and soap. Place a light source over the dish and leave it to attract fleas. When fleas jump to reach the light they end up in the water and drown. The soap breaks the surface tension, ensuring fleas sink in the water and drown.
