General Characteristics of a Freshwater Marsh Ecosystem
General Characteristics of a Freshwater Marsh Ecosystem. Freshwater marshes provide a highly productive ecosystem filled with animal and plant life because they are rich in nutrients. Small mammals, waterfowl and low-growing plants inhabit these areas, providing an amount of life that's out of proportion with the marsh's size.

Location
An open area close to a river or a lake with a slow-draining mineral soil is where a freshwater marsh will form. They're found close to rivers and lakes because that's the marsh's water source. Rain is also a possible water source. The depth of a freshwater marsh will vary from 1 to 6 feet.
Plant Life
An open and flat terrain is conducive to freshwater marsh plant life. Marshes have few or no trees. A number of low-growing plants, such as certain sedges and grasses, are unique to freshwater marshes. Lily pads and reed, a tall, grass-like plant, provide excellent habitat for marsh inhabitants. Cattails and bulrushes are usually found at the edges of the marsh, framing it.
Animals and Waterfowl
Small mammal and waterfowl life is abundant in freshwater marshes. Frogs and turtles can be found in marsh waters, while raccoons, opossums, muskrats, and minks roam the surrounding area. Various bird species can be located at freshwater marshes as well as egrets, marsh wrens, and several species of migratory waterfowl that use these marshes as nesting sites and for food and shelter.
Preservation
Advocacy groups warn of the possible loss of these life-abundant marshes because of human development. The devastation of marsh habitat would mean a serious decline in many of the species that depend upon the marshes for food and shelter. Excessive sediments and nutrients from nearby farming and development have degraded some marshes. Restoration and protection efforts are in effect to help preserve these wetland ecosystems.
