Nothing may be more welcome after a long, dark winter than the sight and feel of the warm sun. The beginning of summer marks the outdoor season, but it also marks the arrival of mosquitoes. Don't let these pesky insects ruin your enjoyment. Repel them with an all-natural ingredient you probably have in your kitchen cupboard: cider vinegar.
A Minor Menace
Worldwide, mosquitoes are known and feared as disease-carriers. In the United States, though, the risk of becoming seriously ill from a mosquito bite is low, according to Pennsylvania State University. Still, many people suffer an allergic reaction to mosquito bites. Redness, swelling and itching at the location of a bite are common and uncomfortable symptoms. For this reason, it's a good idea to protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing clothing that covers most of your skin when you are outdoors -- especially at night, when mosquitoes are most active -- and by spraying exposed areas with something that will repel mosquitoes.
An All-Natural Solution
The most effective mosquito repellents contain DEET, which is a mixture of chemicals. When used properly, DEET has been found to be safe. Still, many people hesitate to use chemical-based repellents directly on exposed skin, especially on children. Cider vinegar is an all-natural solution. Edible and completely safe, it can be applied directly to skin to repel mosquitoes and other insects.
An Effective Remedy
Cider vinegar, like all vinegars, has a strong odor that seems to be a big turnoff for mosquitoes and other insects. In fact, if you consume enough cider vinegar, you might even develop a strong enough body odor that repels pesky pests and not need to apply more vinegar to your skin and clothes, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.
Application Instructions
Pour undiluted cider vinegar into a spray bottle, and then spray the vinegar directly onto your exposed skin. Spraying it on your clothing can add an extra layer of protection. The vinegar will not stain your clothing. In fact, cider vinegar is often used to remove stains. The amount and frequency of cider vinegar applications depend upon how much you perspire and your body chemistry. Simply reapply the vinegar every time you notice its scent starting to fade.
