Moles are insectivores that feed on earthworms and grubs under your lawn. Their tunneling can be destructive to your yard and garden, so if you think you have a mole problem you need to take care of it fast, unless you're OK with the long narrow mounds crisscrossing your lawn. Depending on your personal taste, there are several ways to kill off a mole population.
Flood Their Tunnels
While flooding isn't a guarantee to kill your moles--since they may just run off--it is a cheap and easy way to try to flush them out (pun intended). If you run your garden hose into their holes and fill the holes up, the moles will be forced to leave or they will die. Just be warned, if their tunnels are deep enough it may take a lot of water to fill them, and this could be damaging to your lawn.
Gas Them
There are poisonous gas bombs that exist that will kill moles by releasing toxic gases deep within their tunnels. It is recommended that you hire a licensed pest control company to disperse these poisons, since it is possible for them to leak out of the tunnels and affect the surrounding area if they're used improperly.
Use Deadly Mole Traps
There are many traps that will kill moles within their tunnels, so long as the traps are set right. It's important to find the moles' deep tunnels to set these traps. You can find the deep tunnels by following fresh holes or re-opened holes along a straight line through the yard. One kind of lethal mole trap is called a harpoon trap, and it works to send metal spikes through the moles as the run through their tunnels. Another kind of trap is called a scissor trap, and it basically works just like the name implies, by snapping moles as they run.
Leave Them Poisoned Bait
Use toxic bait only if you don't have small children or pets running around the yard. Poisoned mole bait usually comes in the form of pellets or capsules, which the moles eat. Once they begin to die, if you find them around the yard, don't touch them without gloves. Throw them away in a plastic garbage bag and seal it up.
