With so many types of gutters available, making the right decision can be difficult. Although the styles of gutters have changed over time, their value to a home remains extremely high.
Types
On modern homes, two of the most common styles of gutters are made of aluminum or steel. Both types are extremely popular and similar in nature.
Cost
Aluminum gutters are very cost effective, ranging from about $4 to $9 per foot, while steel gutters come in a wider variety. Galvanized steel is similar to the price of aluminum, but the sturdier, rust-proof stainless steel material goes up to $20 per foot.
Effectiveness
While each gutter system works the same way, steel gutters do the same job and are considered much more durable in the process. Over time, aluminum gutters may become damaged and less effective.
Benefits
Steel gutters are sturdy and will hold up very well over time in all kinds of climates. The aluminum style gutter system has a maintenance advantage in the sense that it will not ever show signs of rust.
Drawbacks
While the steel gutters are strong, they do rust, and will need to be very well maintained. Aluminum gutters are made of relatively frail material and it will not take much to bend, dent, or deform them.
