How Often Should You Water Vinca Flowers?

Vinca is actually three different types of plants, according to David J. Robson, Specialist for the University of Illinois Extension Service. Vinca minor is a perennial groundcover. Vinca major is an annual vine used in mixed-flower containers. The bedding plant vinca, also known as Madagascar periwinkle, is an annual flower. Although they have different uses, these plants have similar water requirements.

Vinca minor is an easy-to-grow ground cover that grows well in most light, even under evergreen trees. It produces glossy green leaves -- some varieties edged in white -- and purple-blue flowers in spring. Once established, vinca minor can grow upwards to six feet long. It tolerates most soil, but thrives in a well-drained, rich soil. Water vinca minor frequently enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Vinca major is an annual vine generally added to a mixed-flower container. It grows three to six feet long and produces green leaves edged in either white or yellow. Like the perennial ground cover, vinca major thrives in rich, well-drained soil, is easy-to-grow and has few problems. This vine requires average watering without leaving the soil soggy; the leaves wilt as a sign that it needs watering. When grown in a mixed container, the water requirements of the other plants will provide sufficient water for vinca major.

The annual bedding flower vinca is also known as Madagascar periwinkle or Catharanthus roseus. Depending on the varieties, this flower grows from six to 15 inches tall with glossy green leaves. From summer to fall it produces single-petal flowers in rose, pink, mauve, white and some variegated colors; several blossoms have a darker center. Vinca flowers need full sunlight and rich, well-draining soil. Water regularly without leaving the soil soggy; the leaves of vinca flowers will curl under when they need watering.

Although vinca are drought-hardy, when starting these plants, they need extra watering, according to Free Plant Network. After planting the vincas in the flower beds or containers, water well. Keep the soil around the vincas moist by frequent waterings. When the vincas show signs of new growth -- by putting out new leaves and blossoms -- reduce the watering to one inch of water per week. Mulching around the plants will help retain soil moisture.
