Wasps in a yard may prove to be a pest if they become aggressive and infested. If you're wondering if your landlord has the responsibility of removing the wasps, the common answer is no. Unless the rental agreement specifically states that the landlord will be wholly responsible for the removal of wasps, it will be the tenant's responsibility to take care of them. One exception to this common practice is if the wasp infestation violates local health and safety ordinances. The landlord then becomes fully responsible.
Before you Rent
Walk the premises of the property, and inspect all of its nooks and crannies for wasp nests. If you don't see any, it doesn't mean they aren't there. Wasp lay dormant during the winter months and so summer is the best time to look for them. Midday is when they are most active. Invite your landlord to help you inspect the property to get a feel of how much she cares about your well-being. Pay attention to what she is willing to do if a problem arises.
Get it in Writing
Study the rental agreement to find if any provision has been made for wasp control. If no mention is made, ask the landlord if she would be willing to take care of the problem if it arises. Get specific language as to which party will be responsible, when they will be required to assess and resolve the issue, who will get rid of the wasps, and who will pay for the cost of removal. If a landlord agrees to control wasps, they must issue a written notice to all tenants 24 hours before a pest control spray or measure is used.
Enforcing the Contract
Call your landlord and let them know that you have discovered a wasp nest and would like it removed. If pest control is in the agreement, they will be obligated to take care of it. If they don't, contact your state's department of consumer affairs to find out what steps you can take to enforce the contract. Let the landlord know what you're going to do and it might be enough to get her to promptly accommodate your request.
DIY Pest Control
Buy a bottle of aerosol insecticide wasp spray. Get the kind that shoots a minimum of 20 feet. Go outside on a windless day and stand at a safe distance from the nest. Early morning is best, because the majority of the wasps will still be hanging around the nest. Fully saturate the nest and all of the wasps. Some might get away, but you can spray again the next day. Once you've killed the wasps, knock the nest down with a broom handle and throw it in the trash.
