Southwest
When planting roses in the Southwest, January and February are the ideal months. Keep the roses well watered and mulched in the summer. Choose roses that do well in the desert, such as Polyantha, Gallicas and Noisette.
Pacific Northwest
In the Pacific Northwest, plant roses in January to April when the soil is not frozen. Select a spot where the roses can receive full sun for at least half of the day. They also prefer well-drained, moist, sandy loam soil and protection from the winds, especially along the coast.
South Central
In the South Central region of the United States, plant roses from December to February. This helps develop a good root system before the weather heats up. In this area, fertilize in early spring and in the middle of summer. If the roses are stressed, spray them again with a liquid fertilizer. Look for thrips, Japanese beetles and cane borers, three primary rose pests in the area.
North Central
The best times to plant roses in the North Central region are either from April to June, or October and November. Choose a spot with at least six hours full sun at planting time. Prepare your garden bed by amending the soil with compost. Plant cold-hardy roses.
Northeast and East Coast
March through June and October and November are the best planting months in the Northeast and on the East Coast. In New England, gardeners should winterize roses by covering them with mulch and wrapping them to protect from the cold and winds. Chose roses that are cold hardy that resist mildew and black spot fungus.
