GoGnats is one of many products that can be utilized by the home gardener trying to combat insects and disease on their plants. GoGnats is somewhat unique as a pesticide in that it can be applied in a variety of ways: as a foliar spray, in a reservoir for hydroponic gardens and as a soil drench. The spray is also nontoxic and safe to use for the organic gardener.
Soil Drench
Though it usually refers to a fertilizer, a soil drench is exactly what it sounds like. It is a fertilizer or pesticide in liquid form that is added to the soil. GoGnats is primarily utilized by and marketed to hydroponic growers who grow their plants in soil-free environments, but GoGnats is equally effective as a pesticide in proper soil. Soil drenches usually need to be added in large quantities, actually drenching the soil in the process, not just getting it moist.
Directions
When using GoGnats in soil, apply twice in the first week of use, then every two weeks thereafter. If you are using GoGnats as a general additive for plant and soil maintenance, use a mixture of 1 tsp. GoGnats per gallon of water. If you have an infestation, up the dosage to 2 oz. per gallon. The pesticide can be mixed with most liquid fertilizers. If applying GoGnats to a container, water the soil until water is coming out the bottom of the pot. If using in a garden, apply in a similarly liberal manner.
Other Uses
GoGnats is effective against gnats, thrips, aphids and many other insect pests. It is also an effective fungicide. It can be used not only as a soil drench, but as a foliar spray in outdoor gardens. The foliar spray acts as a barrier, preventing pests from landing on plant leaves and eating them or spreading disease.
Ingredients
The active ingredients in GoGnats include 33 percent cedar oil and 1 percent sodium lauryl sulfate. Cedar is a well known and long used insect repellent. When insects breathe in cedar, it impairs the pest's mental and nervous faculties. In the process of trying to escape their confusion, the insects exhaust themselves and die. If it does not kill them, the cedar works as a repellent nonetheless. Sodium lauryl sulphate works similarly to diatomaceous earth and Bt, by dehydrating and thus killing insects.
