Plant Toxicity
The severity of toxins varies from roots to flowers with some parts more toxic than others. According to the University of Minnesota, rhubarb leaf stems of rhubarb are edible while the leaf blades are toxic. Toxicity varies among humans too with some people being more sensitive to toxic plants than others. Some people have adverse reactions to plants not considered toxic at all. Reactions to toxic plants are as mild as a skin rash or severe as death.
In Case of Accidental Poisoning
In the event of accidental poisoning, contact poison control, your doctor, your child's pediatrician or your veterinarian if your pet ingested a toxic plant. Medical professionals have an easier time with treatment if you bring as much of the suspected toxic plant with you as possible, including the roots. For large plants or trees, bring branches, leaves, flowers, fruit, seeds and anything else that aids in identification and treatment.
Lantana
Prized by gardeners for its tight clusters of tiny, brightly colored, fragrant flowers lantana is also a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds. However, this attractive plant has toxic parts. For humans, the berries are listed as toxic and possibly lethal, according to Oregon State University. According to the University of Illinois, the berries and foliage are toxic to cattle, sheep, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and horses. Death can come in as little as a few days, but some animals may linger as long as three weeks.
Other Common Poisonous Plants
Many plants commonly found around the home and garden are toxic. In the garden, foxglove, iris, azaleas, hydrangea and cherry, among many others have toxic leaves. Apple seeds are toxic, as are the seeds of columbine, wisteria and morning glory. Plants toxic to the touch include figs, gingko and lady slipper orchids. Common houseplants considered toxic include Boston ivy, English ivy, split leaf philodendron and the umbrella plant.
