The cassia, or senna tree (Senna Surattensis), is small and frequently used as a street or landscape tree in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 through 11. It is capable of reaching 25 feet tall, with a 10-foot spread, but usually remains much smaller. Cassia trees are prolific bloomers, with yellow flowers covering the tree most of the year.
Things You'll Need
Pruning shears or saw
Tree stake
All-purpose fertilizer
Broom
Prune the cassia tree every other year to maintain a tight, well-formed canopy of leaves and branches. Prune it after a heavy flowering episode, usually in late summer or during the winter.
Stake young trees to protect them from wind. Cassias easily blow over, so stake them during the first three years of growth.
Water your cassia tree regularly, whenever soil is dry or rainfall is insufficient.
Fertilize the tree with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in the spring and fall, following package directions for application.
Sweep up the black seed pods that fall from the tree during autumn.
