If you have a Craftsman LT2000 riding lawn tractor, you can substitute the drive belt that runs the mower deck with any 3/8-inch wide V-groove belt designed for a Craftsman 42-inch mower deck once the original belt starts to deteriorate and slip on the pulley system. The process for substituting the worn out belt for a new one is straightforward and will only take a few minutes to complete. This is an ideal DIY project for most homeowners looking to save money on service repair bills.
Things You'll Need
Wrench set
Position the mower deck to its lowest position with the lift lever that protrudes from the rear fender. This increases the space between the mower deck and the bottom of the lawn tractor.
Look under the front of the motor and locate the motor pulley that bolts to the main shaft on the bottom of the engine. Next to the main shaft is a guard that keeps the belt from slipping off the pulley. Remove the bolts that hold the guard in place with a wrench and then take off the guard.
Spin the pulley as you pull the belt off it. Spinning the pulley makes it easier to get the belt off.
Remove the belt from the mower deck and then install the substitute belt onto the mower deck. The deck has two large mandrel pulleys and two idler pulleys. Routing the belt is relatively simple. However, if needed, make a picture of the belt routing so you do not forget how to properly route the belt.
Place the belt guard over the pulley on the motor and secure it with the bolts and wrench.
