To many people, owls are a nuisance. The birds, also referred to as raptors, feed on poultry and small livestock and can create unsanitary conditions with their droppings and regurgitation of undigested materials. If you own a farm and allow your farmyard chickens, pigeons and ducks to freely roam, you may be prone to frequent visits from these predator birds. To eliminate owls, block their access to birds they may feed on, and scare them away from your property
Things You'll Need
Spike strips
Nylon netting or poultry wire
Explosive device
Scarecrow
Poles
Electric shocker devices
Bird traps
Mice or rats
Move farmyard birds indoors at nighttime when owls are hunting. Give farmyard birds water and food indoors at dusk, so they get used to moving inside when the sun goes down. Once the birds are indoors, the owl does not have access to them and may leave the area.
Remove any landing surfaces where owls may perch to observe their prey before attacking. Place spike strips on poles and other surfaces that owls land on, or remove trees near sites where poultry roam.
Cover small livestock and poultry enclosures with nylon netting or poultry wire. By blocking the owl's access to its prey, you may prompt it to leave to look for food elsewhere.
Incorporate scare tactics to get rid of owls. Install an exploding device near the owl's areas. Exploding devices emit a gunshot-like noise that scares away pest birds, including owls. Combine this scare tactic with a scarecrow that you regularly move around your property.
Place poles, approximately 14 ft. tall, around areas prone to owl attacks. Place electric pole shocker devices on top of the poles. When owls perch on the poles, they get an electric shock, which motivates them to avoid the area and to set up shop elsewhere.
Place bird traps around the owl territory to trap the birds so you can relocate them elsewhere. Bird traps use life feed such as mice or rats to attract the birds. Once the owl enters the cage to get to the food source, the cage closes and traps it.
Tips & Warnings
Owls are protected by state and federal laws. Killing, trapping and possessing them is illegal without the required permit. Before taking any repelling measures, check with your local wildlife service to find out which methods are permitted in your area without a permit.
