Fruit flies -- small, gnat-like flies with characteristic red eyes -- enter homes through window screens and cracks, attracted by the scent of overripe and rotting fruit and vegetable matter. The flies are harmless to humans, but cause much annoyance by swarming and hovering around compost bins, trash receptacles, garbage disposals and unrefrigerated fruits and vegetables. You can eliminate these pests with a homemade apple cider vinegar and dish soap trap.
Things You'll Need
Small containers
Apple cider vinegar
Liquid dish soap
Pour 2 inches of apple cider vinegar in a jar, cup or bowl. Fruit flies are attracted to the scent of fermenting liquid. Stale beer will also work in this trap.
Add two drops of liquid dish soap to the vinegar to break the liquid's surface tension.
Place the trap wherever fruit flies are a problem. Fruit flies will land on the liquid and drown.
