While hornets can be beneficial at keeping other pests away from your garden or yard, their stings can be dangerous, especially if you or someone in your family are allergic to hornet stings. Several types of remedies for getting rid of hornets are available. The most effective is the "Queen Trap." Using a Queen Trap, you can attract and kill the queen hornet. Once the queen is dead, a colony will either fall apart or, if action is taken early enough, be prevented from forming.
Things You'll Need
2-liter bottle
Scissors or utility knife
Stapler
Sugar
Water
Dish soap
Raw meat (optional)
String (optional)
Cut the top off a two-liter bottle approximately 1/3 of the way from the top.
Rotate the top piece of the two-liter bottle so it is perpendicular to the base of the two-liter bottle, and staple it in place.
Fill the base of the two-liter bottle with an equal mix of sugar and water. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
Add a drop of regular dish soap to the sugar water solution, or tie a small portion of raw meat to a piece of string. Staple the top of the string to the side of the two-liter bottle base, keeping the raw meat approximately one to two inches above the sugar water.
Place the trap near the hornet colony or around the area you notice insects.
Tips & Warnings
Another option is to use a pesticide, such as Raid, specially formulated for hornet infestations.
Any hornets that make their way indoors can be vacuumed up using a hose attachment.
Keep garbage cans clean and sealed to prevent hornet colonization near your garbage.
Be careful not to provoke hornets by swatting at them or stepping on them. Hornet stings can be painful and dangerous, especially if you or a family member are allergic.
