Raspberry bushes come in several varieties that bear different color fruits, including yellow, purple, red and black. The fruits grow on canes that grow unchecked without proper pruning techniques. A raspberry bush that is encroaching onto your property will continue to grow and attract unwanted animals. Preventing a raspberry bush from spreading involves pruning the bush and treating it with herbicide.
Things You'll Need
Sharp pruning shears
Herbicide
Plastic tarp
Root barrier
Prune any canes that are growing into the unwanted area with a pair of sharp pruning shears. Cut the canes no shorter than 5 feet long if you wish the canes to bear fruit. Otherwise, completely cut back any nuisance canes to ground level.
Treat any unwanted canes with herbicide. Mix herbicides according to package directions and only spray or paint the canes you wish destroyed. Cover any viable canes with a tarp to prevent them from being exposed.
Dig a trench that is at least 8 inches deep around the perimeter of the raspberry bush. Treat the trench with a root barrier according to the package directions. The root barrier stops the spread of the root system, which discourages any new raspberry bramble growth in unwanted areas.
Tips & Warnings
Wear safety goggles and a respirator when cutting back the raspberry bush and treating it with herbicide.
