Centipedes are not only unsightly but having them in your house can pose a danger to you and your family. Centipedes have pincer-like maxillipeds near their head that they can use to bite and expel a toxic substance. Although usually harmless, a centipede's bite is painful and can be dangerous to children with insect allergies. However, with the proper home maintenance, you can keep centipedes out of your house.
Tend to places in your house that are inviting to centipedes. Centipedes like to live in cool, moist places. If you see centipedes in your basement or bathroom, buy a dehumidifier to deter them from coming there.
Clean up areas around the outside of your house that centipedes would like. Remove any piles of leaves or wood from near your house -- centipedes are attracted to these things.
Spread diatomaceous earth around the outside of your house; as centipedes approach, it will puncture their exoskeleton and kill them. It is completely safe to use around pets and children. Diatomaceous earth can be purchased at most garden and do-it-yourself stores.
Seal places in your houses where centipedes can get in. Check garage doors, crawlspace vents, basement windows and doors to make sure centipedes are not getting in through cracks.
Call an exterminator if your problem persists. The exterminator will know how to rid the house of centipedes but it may be costly.
