Squash bugs are large, hard-shelled insects that are attracted to specific plants and vines, especially squash plants. Their size and appetite ensures a damaged future for your plants unless you take measures to kill existing bugs and prevent new ones from infesting your plants. While there are many chemical treatments available for purchase in gardening stores and online, you can create a homemade solution using oil soap. The soap will enable the chile water to absorb into the bug effectively, and will also create a protective barrier around plants for the future.
Things You'll Need
4 hot chiles
1 tbsp. oil soap
Garden sprayer
Chop four hot chiles and place them in 1 quart of water. Let the chiles steep for 24 hours.
Strain the chiles from the water, and combine it with 1 tbsp. of oil soap in a garden sprayer.
Replace the top of the sprayer and shake well to mix the solution.
Spray the plant with the squash bug or bugs thoroughly with the homemade insecticide. Once the current bugs are gone, the solution will repel all insects and protect the plant from further infestation.
Tips & Warnings
To ensure constant coverage, respray the plants if it has rained or snowed, or if the garden has been heavily watered.
