Reel mowers are economical alternatives to gas and electric mowers for cutting your lawn. When using a reel mower, you often cut your grass a little bit higher than you would with a traditional mower. Leaving the grass a little longer promotes root growth, which can make for a healthier lawn, especially in the summer. You may want to cut the grass a little shorter at times, though -- if you are going on vacation and will have to skip your regular mowing one week, for example. You can lower the blade on a Scotts Elite reel mower in two places, depending on the mowing height you want.
Things You'll Need
Socket wrench
Flat-head screwdriver
Roller Assembly
Loosen and remove the nuts on both sides of the rear roller bar with a socket wrench. The nuts secure the bolts on each side of the roller bar assembly to the frame of the Scotts Elite.
Pull the bolt out of one side with your fingers. Insert the bolt through the lowest hole on the roller bracket and the top hole of the mower frame plate for the lowest cutting position.
Repeat on the opposite side, placing the bolt in the corresponding position -- through the lowest hole on the roller bracket and the top hole of the mower frame plate. Thread the nuts back onto the bolts and tighten with the socket wrench.
Wheels
Remove the right axle nut on the inside of the mower frame behind the wheel adjustment plate. Hold the axle pin with a socket or flat-head screwdriver while removing the axle nut with a socket wrench.
Pull the wheel adjustment plate and the wheel away from the mower until the axle pin clears the mower frame.
Rotate the wheel assembly up until the axle pin is at the highest hole on the side of the frame. Release the wheel assembly so the axle pin protrudes through the hole on the frame.
Thread the axle nut back onto the axle pin and tighten with a wrench.
Repeat the process with the left wheel, positioning the axle pin in the highest hole on the side of the frame, as you did with the right wheel.
Tips & Warnings
Some models might require removing the wheel to access the axle pin. Pry off the center cap with a flat-head screwdriver, then pry the C-clip washer off the center of the wheel to remove the wheel.
