Rats are a growing problem in the United States. The population of rats is equivalent to the population of humans, and they are found anywhere from heavily populated cities to farmlands and forests. These mammals will damage homes, destroy property, and can reproduce quickly to cause an infestation. If you are finding rat droppings and nests, hearing noises when the sun goes down, and seeing smudges against your walls and beams, the chances are high that you are dealing with a rat. Trapping this tricky rodent is going to be the best way to catch it and to remove it permanently.
Things You'll Need
Spring trap
Bacon or other bait
Poison bait
Sticky paper trap
Cook up several pieces of bacon to use as bait for a trap that catches the animal humanely. Not only is the rat going to be more active because it smells the food that is cooking, but will easily target the bacon in the area where you place the trap. Put the bacon onto the trap without setting it, and place it in the areas where you think that the rat is living. This will get the rat to trust the trap, and it will return in search of food. This will increase your chances of catching this pesky rodent. After a couple of days, set the trap and place it back in the area you believe the tricky rat is living. Attics, garages and basements are popular places for rats to live. When you find the rat in the trap, release it outdoors far from your home, or call animal control.
Place poison bait in the areas that you suspect the rat is living. Check the poison to see if it has been eaten, and after a day look for the dead animal. The rat may wander off and die somewhere in your home, so be sure to look thoroughly to see if its body is decaying and rotting.
Call the professionals. There are animal control specialists and pest companies that will come into your home to get rid of these unwanted creatures, even if it is only a single rat.
Set sticky paper around the areas where you have seen the rat. When they walk on it their feet and fur will stick to the paper. Check periodically to see if the animal has been caught. The drawback to this method is that you will have to kill the rat yourself if it has been caught in the sticky paper.
Set a traditional spring trap baited with peanut butter. If the trap catches the rat, put the rat into a plastic bag and call the local animal control center. Alternatively, bury it in your yard.
