Black snakes are commonly found populating backyards or wooded areas around homes. This is because houses attract other pests like rats and mice that are looking for shelter and food. Black snakes are not poisonous and actually act as a natural pest control for ridding the home of other pests. However, a lot of people do not like the idea of a snake or snakes living anywhere near their home. You can eradicate black snakes from your property using a few simple methods.
Keep any tall grasses from growing around your home as these offer snakes an area for hunting and shelter.
Remove any piles of yard debris from around the home.
Keep the bushes and shrubbery around your home trimmed to eliminate a black snake's hunting ground. Trimmed bushes and shrubbery also will make it easier to see a black snake.
Maintain your home's pest control. Keep frogs, rats, mice and bugs away from the home to remove the snake's natural food source. Hire a pest-control service to routinely spray your home for these pests, if desired.
Close off any areas where snakes might hide. This includes your porch, deck or under a shed.
Locate a local herpetological (snake enthusiast) society and ask for a volunteer to remove any unwanted black snakes from your home. Some may require a small fee while others will offer this service for free.
Tips & Warnings
Objects like wood and metal retain the heat of the midday sun for hours and will keep the cold-blooded snake warm.
