Gardeners are often surprised to see the elegant stinkhorn in their gardens, and tend to be offended by the smell it gives off. This mushroom gives off an offensive odor that's similar to rotting meat. This smell is designed to attract insects, which land on the sticky surface and then spread the spores to other areas on their feet. The elegant stinkhorn is not deep-rooted, making it easy to kill by physical removing it.
Things You'll Need
Garden gloves
Plastic garbage bag
Put on a pair of gardening gloves. Pull the elegant stinkhorns up with your hands, making sure to remove the small white root at the bottom.
Look for more stinkhorns that might be covered with dead leaves or old wood. Place all the mushrooms in a plastic bag, tie it closed and throw the bag into an outside garbage can with a lid.
Remove decaying mulch, which will encourage growth of the stinkhorn. Replace it with fresh mulch or a rock-based mulch. Inorganic substrate deters growth of the smelly fungus.
Tips & Warnings
Wear a dust mask if you are very sensitive to the stinkhorn's pungent aroma.
Chemicals are not recommended or necessary.
