Black flies are 1/16 to 1/8 inch in size and are most commonly found near springs and rivers, where fast running water can facilitate larvae development. Because the females bite and suck blood, black flies are often mistaken for mosquitoes at dusk, because they similarly appear most frequently at dusk. If you prefer to control the number of black flies in your vicinity, use similar methods as when ridding a home of flies.
Things You'll Need
Fly paper roll
Light trap
Unravel the fly paper so the original container hangs at the bottom of a spiral of sticky paper.
Hang the fly paper roll or light trap in a location that is most likely to attract black flies -- generally near food and trash cans. Additionally, black flies like damp areas, so drains or fountains are also good spots to hang the either type of trap.
Plug in the light trap to begin drawing the flies in. The flies are attracted to the UV light emitting from the trap, possibly due to the fact that flies prefer warmer temperatures. In the case of fly paper, the scent of the paper attracts the black fly, gluing the insect to its surface. In either scenario, you'll kill most of the black flies in your vicinity.
