Definition
The scion is a cutting that is located on the sides of the plant. This cutting is most commonly grafted onto the root system of another plant. The scion is selected to be cut especially for its flowers, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. The genes in the scion are able to be duplicated by the scion plant.
Significance
Scions are created from the cuttings, which are usually year-old stems from trees that are to be preserved.
Considerations
Scion wood in the mid-winter.
Time Frame
Place a bundle of scions within a wet paper towel and then in a Ziploc bag. Then place the scions into the refrigerator. Make sure to label each tree. Check back weekly to see how much the scions are growing.
Grafting
Cut the scion around 4 to 8 inches long. Try to have at least four scions from each tree you are wanting to preserve.
