The bark of a palm tree is the force that keeps the tree alive. If the bark is "ringed," the palm tree's ability to deliver nutrients to the top of the tree is effectively eliminated. Ringing starves the tree and causes it to die. Killing a palm tree probably will require a permit. Each area has its own requirements and processes, and felling a palm tree without the proper permits can bring a large fine in some parts of the U.S.
Things You'll Need
Marking paint
Chain saw
Axe
Paint two rings around the palm tree with marking paint. The position of the paint on the tree does not matter. Make the rings high enough that you can work with them comfortably. Position the rings approximately 6 inches apart.
Place the tip of the chainsaw against the top ring. Start the saw and slice into the tree, following the painted ring around the tree. Make the cut deep enough completely penetrate the bark.
Repeat the process with the lower ring.
Remove the bark between the grooves, using an an ax. Remove all of the bark from the grooved areas around the tree. Although this step is not absolutely necessary, it will ensure death to the tree.
