Wasps are social insects that can be extremely annoying and even dangerous to people allergic to their stings. Yellow jackets, baldfaced hornets and paper wasps make papery-looking nests by chewing wood fibers and pasting the muck that's created into walls. Wasps generally build their nests in protected enclosures, such as in trees and shrubs; under horizontal beams and tree limbs; inside sheds and garages; and even underground. Though the simplest way to get rid of them involves toxic pesticides, there are other, safer ways to get rid of them.
Things You'll Need
Protective clothing (goggles, long sleeves and pants, hat, gloves)
Mint extract
Rubbing alcohol
Plastic soda bottle (no larger than 1 liter)
Trash bag
Large jar
Small funnel
Tape
1 can concentrated apple juice
Put on as much protective clothing as possible, especially if you are allergic to wasps.
In the soda bottle, mix together 10 ounces of rubbing alcohol, a whole bottle of mint extract and enough water to fill the bottle.
Locate the nest.
Approach it at night, which is when wasps are the least active and the most likely to be inside.
Find an opening in the nest and pour in the contents of the soda bottle.
Wait 24 hours.
Knock down the nest, or unearth it from its hole. Seal it in a trash bag and toss it in the garbage.
To take care of any surviving wasps, create a wasp trap.
Pour the apple juice and 1/2 can of water into the jar. Place the funnel over the opening of the jar. If desired, tape it in place. The wasps are attracted, climb down the funnel and drown in the apple juice when they can't escape.
