After spending hours planting and tending your garden, the last thing you want is for a chipmunk to eat your vegetables and tunnel under your flowers. If you find a chipmunk hole, that is exactly what is going on. But filling in the hole hardly deters the chipmunk. It will either dig the hole out or create a new hole. The only way to permanently rid your garden of its chipmunk problem is to exterminate the chipmunk.
Things You'll Need
Mothballs
Rat trap
Peanut butter
Oatmeal
Box
Nuts
Sunflower seeds
Live trap
Place mothballs around your yard's perimeter and into the chipmunk hole. The mothball smell deters the chipmunks from entering your yard. Place one mothball every 2 to 3 feet around the entire yard and five to six mothballs in the hole.
Set a rat trap using peanut butter and oatmeal. Mix a tablespoon of peanut butter with one to 2 tsp. of dry oatmeal. Roll the mixture into a ball and place it on the trap. Position the trap near the chipmunk hole. Cut a hole in a large box and place the box over the trap and hole. The box prevents birds from being caught in the trap.
Scatter nuts and sunflower seeds inside a live trap. Place the trap near the chipmunk hole. Once the chipmunk is captured, call your local humane society to see how to dispose of it. Most cities do not allow captured wild animals to be released, so the chipmunk will need to be disposed of.
If you have a dog or a cat, let your dog out in your yard during the day as frequently as possible, and allow your cat to roam the yard. These larger animals scare chipmunks from your property. Perform this step with caution if there are predatory animals living in your area.
