Spectracide malathion is an outdoor insecticide formulated to protect flowers, shrubs, fruits and vegetables from leaf-eating insects. This 50-percent-malathion concentrate is primarily effective against aphids, red spider mites, mealybugs, thrips, scales and whiteflies. A one pint container of concentrate makes up to 48 gallons of insecticide spray, but usage depends of the type of plant being treated. Spectracide malathion is designed for outdoor use with a tank sprayer. The product should never be used indoors.

Flowers And Bushes
Mix 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons of Spectracide malathion concentrate per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control aphids. Spray the plant thoroughly, covering both the upper and lower surface of leaves and other infected plant parts. Begin treatments as soon as insects appear.
Mix 1 tablespoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control bagworms, fourlined leaf bugs, rose leafhoppers, Japanese beetle adults, mealybugs, box elder bugs, mites, tarnished plant bugs, thrips, white flies and woolly aphids. Spray as you would for other insects.
Mix 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control black, oyster shell and soft brown scales. Spray as you would for other insects.
Mix 2 teaspoon of Spectracide malathion per gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control oak kermes and juniper or fletcher scales. Spray as you would for other insects.
Fruits
Mix 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control aphids. Consult the product's label for the type of fruit you are treating. Different fruits must be treated at different intervals, ranging from three to 14 days apart, depending on the fruit involved. Cover all leaf surfaces thoroughly. Do not apply malathion-based sprays within seven days of harvest.
Mix 1 tablespoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control fourlined leaf bugs, Japanese beetle adults, red spider mites, tent caterpillars, leafrollers, grape leafhoppers, mealybugs, moths, pear psyllids, plum curculio, tarnished plant bugs, thrips, woolly aphids and whiteflies.
Mix 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control scale crawlers. Spray as you would for other insects.
Citrus
Mix 2 teaspoons of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control aphids, scales, thrips and white flies. Do not apply the product during full bloom.
Spray to thoroughly cover all citrus branches and the upper and lower surfaces of foliage. Thorough coverage is necessary to be effective against insects.
Make three applications per year on citrus crops, with at least 30 days between applications. Never apply within seven days of harvest.
Vegetables
Mix 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control aphids. Consult the product's label for the type of vegetable you are treating. Different vegetables must be treated at different intervals, ranging from five to 14 days apart, depending on the vegetable involved. Cover the affected foliage thoroughly. For some varieties, malathion-based sprays cannot be applied within 14 days of harvest.
Mix 1 tablespoon of Spectracide malathion per 1 gallon of water in a tank sprayer to control fourlined leaf bugs, Japanese beetle adults, red spider mites, leafhoppers, mealybugs, thrips, white flies and tarnished plant bugs. Spray as you would for other insects.
Treat all crops when winds are calm and no rain is predicted for at least 24 hours. Wear gloves, protective clothing and protective goggles when mixing and spraying this solution.
Tips & Warnings
When cleaning your sprayer afterward, rinse the sprayer out over the area just sprayed. This helps prevent runoff to other areas.
Malathion is toxic to humans and animals. Keep children and pets clear of the treated area until the product has dried. Wash your hands after using and remove and wash any clothing the chemical splashed on.
Spectracide malathion concentrate and diluted solutions are highly toxic to bees sprayed while visiting blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow it to drift to blooming crops while bees are active in the treatment area.
