Bird activity can be detrimental to bushes around your home, especially if you are attempting to grow berries or other fruit. When the fruit is ripest, birds will swoop in and devour every last piece unless you deter them. There are several ways to keep birds out of bushes; these include physical, visual and sound repellents. Protect your bushes with one or more of these deterrents to eliminate bird activity.
Things You'll Need
Flash tape
Dowel rods or poles
Scare-eye balloons
Bird deterrent whistle
Scissors
Netting
Stakes
Wrap some flash tape around a few dowel rods or poles and stick them in the ground around the bushes. Flash tape is a shiny material that flashes in the sunlight, startling the bird and altering its direction. Flash tape typically comes in red and silver as well as rainbow.
Place scare-eye balloons on or around the bushes. These small, rounded devices have a similar effect as the flash tape, startling the bird with a threatening "eye" in the center of the ball. These visual repellents also have reflective tape on them. They are very effective in deterring woodpeckers.
Buy a waterproof bird deterrent whistle or other sound repellent. It is important to determine what type of bird you are trying to repel when using this type of repellent, because sound deterrents are often specific to bird species.
Cut a piece of disposable plant netting large enough to cover the bush or bushes. Drape the netting over the bushes, ensuring full coverage. Hold the netting down with 6-foot gardening stakes. For large areas, stake the netting down every fifth or sixth bush.
