Flea infestations in the home quickly multiply from one or two fleas to an entire colony. Once the tiny pest rides in on your clothing or the back of your pet, it sets about laying eggs in carpeting and upholstery. To successfully get rid of a flea infestation you must treat to kill all stages of the flea life cycle, including fleas, larvae and eggs. Many treatments work over a period of time, but you can kill fleas now with other remedies to greatly reduce the population.
Things You'll Need
Vacuum
Trash bag
Laundry detergent
Bowl
1 tsp. dishwashing detergent
Spoon
Nightlight
Shampoo
Vacuum curtains, carpet and upholstery to get rid of flea eggs, larvae and fleas. Seal the vacuum bag in a trash bag immediately after vacuuming to kill the fleas.
Launder all washable fabrics, including pet bedding covers, washable upholstery and blankets. Use laundry detergent and the hottest water possible to kill fleas in all stages of the life cycle. Dry the fabrics in the dryer, when possible, or hang dry.
Fill a shallow bowl two-thirds of the way full. Squirt 1 tsp. dishwashing detergent into the bowl and stir to mix.
Plug in a nightlight in a room where fleas have been spotted. Set the bowl of detergent and water underneath the nightlight and turn the nightlight on; if necessary, darken the room by closing curtains. Fleas are attracted by the light and will go to the water and drown when the dish detergent prevents them from flying or hopping away.
Shampoo your pets to kill fleas residing in their fur. Any mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo, works well for this as it is the soap that kills the fleas.
