When your belly is full from chomping on a big bowl of popcorn sit back and examine one of the unpopped kernels. Lying below that hard shell is a little seed bursting with growth potential. Yes, it’s true. You can grow your own popcorn plant from the same kernels that you use for popping. Remove three or four popcorn kernels from your favorite bag of gourmet popcorn and watch the seeds come to life.
Things You'll Need
Two paper towels
Clear plastic cup
Popcorn kernels
4-inch pots
Organic potting soil
Lay two paper towels on top of one another and saturate them with water. Squeeze the paper towels into a clump, removing the excess water.
Stuff the paper towels into a clear plastic cup. Slide the popcorn kernels into the cup, using your fingers to set them in between the walls of the cup and the wet paper towels.
Rest the cup in an area that receives bright, filtered sunlight. Turn the cup 1/4 turn every day to ensure that the kernels receive equal sunlight.
Check the cup every day for seed germination. Popcorn seeds can take anywhere from five to 14 days to germinate, so have patience.
Keep the paper towel damp as the popcorn plants germinate and grow. Within two to three weeks you will have tiny popcorn plants rising from the kernels and extending above the rim of the cup.
Transplant the popcorn plants into 4-inch pots filled with organic potting soil (one plant per pot) when they reach 2 to 3 inches in length. Keep the soil evenly moist at all times and continue to provide bright, filtered sun.
