The Missouri Department of Conservation explains that chiggers are the larval form of Trombiculidae mites. Contrary to popular belief, chiggers do not burrow under the skin; they bite and attach to the skin, injecting saliva that dissolves skins cells. Your skin forms hard structures called a stylostome around the chigger. The srylostome causes your skin to itch and form red welts. Sevin insect killer uses the active ingredient known as carbaryl to control chiggers in your lawn. Use Sevin properly to kill chiggers without damaging your yard.

Mow your lawn before applying Sevin dust or granular insect killer. Confirm the outside temperatures is 55 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit before application.
Apply the granular Sevin with a spreader at a rate of 2 1/4 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. As each spreader is different, refer to your spreader's manufacturer for the proper setting to achieve this rate.
Water your lawn immediately after applying the granular version of Sevin. Reapply once every seven days for chigger infestation, but don't apply the insecticide more than four times a year.
Apply Sevin dust immediately after watering your lawn or after a rain. Wear rubber gloves when shaking the dust from the canister. Do not water again for at least two days after application of the dust. The dust only kills chiggers that are present when you apply the dust to the lawn.
Dust the lawn every two weeks, if necessary, to kill additional chiggers. Do not apply more than four times a year.

Wait until the lawn is completely dry before allowing your children and pets to enter.
