There are two main systems on a John Deere lawn tractor that needs periodic greasing as part of general maintenance. The front axle and front wheels, and the spindles on the mower deck. Grease provides lubrication on the mower's moving parts; if the components are not greased, the parts will dry and start to rub against one another causing wear and breakage. Grease the machine every 25 hours of use. The procedure only takes around 5 minutes to complete.
Things You'll Need
Grease gun
All-purpose spray lube
Front Axle
Park the lawn mower on a hard, level surface and set the parking brake. Ensure that the wheels are straight ahead.
Locate the grease nipple on the inside of the right wheel. Place the end of the grease gun over the nipple. Pump the handle until there is pressure in the handle of the grease gun. Remove the end of the grease gun from the nipple. Repeat on the other tire.
Locate the grease nipple at the front of the right wheel shaft directly beside the tire. Place the end of the grease gun on the nipple and pump the grease gun handle until grease starts to come out of the top of the bushing. Remove the end of the grease gun and repeat on the left side.
Place the end of the grease gun onto the grease nipple in the middle of the axle, directly underneath. Pump the handle until there is pressure in the handle. Remove the end of the grease gun from the nipple.
Lubricating the Mower Deck
Lower the mower deck to the lowest setting.
Locate the nipple on the right side of the mower deck, on top of the blade brake pivot. Spray the brake blade pivot with all-purpose spray to lubricate; repeat on the left side.
Locate the deck idler pivot, to the left of the right hand blade spindle. Spray the pivot point with all-purpose spray.
