Sodium borate is a salt of boric acid. Solutions of borate have numerous uses. They can be used as biochemical buffers in chemical laboratories, as termite treatment and as a means of clearing ground ivy. Sodium borate sold under the brand name Borax is a common laundry additive. When borate crystals are heated, they form shapes that resemble popcorn. Borate is water soluble and different concentrations of solution are recommended for different jobs.
Things You'll Need
Generic sodium borate, or Borax
Kitchen scale
Water
Measuring cup
Spoon
Five-gallon bucket
Weigh out 10 oz. of sodium borate powder using a kitchen scale. Measure 1/2 cup of hot water using a measuring cup.
Pour the borate into the hot water in the measuring cup and stir with a spoon.
Fill a five-gallon bucket halfway to the top with cold water.
Pour the borate solution into the five-gallon bucket. Stir with a spoon. Solution will be suitable for ground-ivy control.
