Boric acid is a compound used to effectively control indoor pests such as cockroaches and ants. Unlike aerosol spray products, which kill bugs on contact, boric acid acts more slowly--insects take the poison bait back to their colonies, destroying the entire nest. Boric acid is also less toxic than aerosols, and safer to use around children and pets. You can mix boric acid with something sweet or greasy to attract insects more effectively.
Things You'll Need
Peanut butter
Saucepan
Honey
Boric acid
Masking tape
Mint apple jelly
For Grease-Loving Insects
Combine 4 tbsp. creamy peanut butter in a saucepan with 6 tbsp. honey.
Heat the mixture until it melts.
Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in 3/4 tsp. boric acid. Allow the mixture to cool.
Smear a small amount of the mixture on the non-sticky side of masking tape strips.
Stick the masking tape wherever you have noticed insect pests. Change the tape every two days.
Store the remaining bait in an airtight container labeled "poison."
For Sugar-Loving Insects

Remove the jelly from the heat and stir in 2 tbsp. boric acid. Allow the mixture to cool.
Smear a small amount of the mixture on the non-sticky side of masking tape strips.
Stick the masking tape wherever you have noticed insect pests. Change the tape every two days.
Refrigerate the remaining bait in an airtight container labeled "poison."
