Fleas are regular inhabitants of outdoor areas but we seldom think about them until affected by an infestation. When a pet or farm animal becomes irritated by the presence of fleas, the infestation must be removed quickly to prevent the fleas from taking up residence in your home. While there are many commercial flea pesticides available, their toxic ingredients can irritate pets, pose a danger to children and have an ill-effect on the environment. By making your own and using natural flea killers, you can get rid of the flea infestation and avoid potential harm and irritation.
Things You'll Need
Nightlight
Bowl
Dishwashing detergent
Spray bottle
Vacuum
Plug in a nightlight in each area where fleas are known to exist. The tiny insects are attracted by the light and will flock to the area at night.
Fill a small bowl halfway with water. Stir 1 tsp. dishwashing detergent into the water and place the bowl beneath the nightlight. Fleas will go to the water only to be drowned by the soap solution.
Discard the dead flea-filled bowl of soapy water each morning and repeat this technique nightly until no more fleas are found in the water.
Supplement the soap-water bowl at night by making flea killer in a spray bottle. Mix 1 tbsp. dishwashing detergent in 2 cups water to fill a spray bottle. Spray fleas on sight to kill them with the soap solution.
Vacuum daily to remove flea eggs from carpeting, upholstery and pet bedding. This disrupts the life cycle and prevents fleas from multiplying.
Tips & Warnings
Sprinkle diatomaceous earth on pet bedding, carpeting, upholstery and in outdoor living areas to kill fleas. The nontoxic powder is safe around pets and people but kills fleas by causing them to dehydrate and die.
Place a drop or two of lemon essential oil on your dog's collar to repel fleas.
Make a lemon spray by boiling six lemon halves in 1 quart water and straining the liquid into a spray bottle. Spray your dog, your skin and household surfaces to repel fleas with the natural solution.
