Poets, songwriters and artists often compare their muse's beauty or attributes to fragrant flowers such as the rose. On special holidays such as Valentine's Day, lovers sometimes exchange pink roses to express romantic love while youths give white roses to symbolize purity. Rare purple roses are good flowers to give for demonstrating passionate deep feelings of love. Purple roses are not as easy to find as other colors. You can make differing shades of purple flowers by tinting a white one.
Things You'll Need
1 cup of water
Vase
Red food coloring
Blue food coloring
Straw or pencil
White rose bud or flower
Sharp knife
Pour 1 cup of warm water in a slender glass or ceramic vase.
Add 10 drops of red and 10 drops of blue food coloring to the water. Stir the colors together using a straw or pencil.
Cut the flower with a sharp knife above or below the nodule on the rose's stem. Make the cut at an angle so that the flower can absorb more of the coloring.
Place the cut rose stem in the water. Leave the flower in the mixture for one to two days. You will see the color deepen as the flower absorbs the water.
Tips & Warnings
Adjust the depth of color by decreasing or increasing the food coloring equally.
For a lighter shade of purple, remove the flower from the tinted water after a day or two.
