Trumpet lilies are beautiful flowers considered part of the lily family, although they aren't pure lilies. Their name comes from blooms that are similar to the shape of a trumpet, and they come in a variety of colors such as white and pink. Trumpet lilies bloom during the summer and can live indoors or outdoors depending on the climate.

Dig a hole for the trumpet lily, using a small spade or your fingers, that is large enough for the diameter of the bulb and twice as deep. Plant trumpet lilies in rich, well-draining soil so that the bulb is equal to its length below the surface. If the plant hasn't grown yet, plant the bulb with the point down. The bulb can be planted in the ground or a pot, but a pot allows for easier transfer inside during cold months. Trumpet lilies prefer a mildly alkaline soil.
Place the trumpet lily where it will get full sun all day.
Keep the soil mildly damp. Press a finger into the soil to test it. If it's squishy, it has too much water and the roots could rot. Water once a week to dampen. When you press your finger to the soil, the soil should spring back.
Snip off yellow leaves. This can be because of over-watering, root rot or cold temperatures. Move the plant to a warmer spot, and let it dry out a bit if it is too wet. Spray the plant with benzyl adenine and gibberellin 4+7 to help stop the leaf yellowing. Follow label instructions for application specifics.
Store bulbs in a cool area or refrigerator to start the growth process. They need to be kept between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Do this in the winter if you keep the plants indoors. Store in a cool place for at least three weeks before planting.
