Failure to properly store fermenting fruits, vegetables and various perishable foods makes homes susceptible to fruit flies. Fruit flies are also drawn to trash containers, garbage disposals and open food containers, where these little insects breed and lay hundreds of eggs. Although common year round, fruit flies thrive during summer and fall months, when fresh produce is prevalent. Besides being annoying, fruit flies can contaminate foods with disease-generating organisms and make homes unsanitary. Promptly kill fruit flies with a dishwashing liquid solution.
Things You'll Need
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
3 drops liquid dish soap
Jar
Spoon
Plastic wrap
Toothpick
Pour 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and three drops of liquid dish soap into a jar. Mix the water, vinegar and soap with a spoon. Fruit flies are enticed by the solution's scent.
Seal the jar's opening with plastic wrap. Using a toothpick, puncture three holes in the plastic wrap. The fruit flies will access these holes and get trapped in the solution until they drown.
Place the jar near the rotten fruit, trashcan or area infested with fruit flies. Wait for the fruit flies to take the bait and die.
Empty the contents of the jar into the garbage. If necessary, refill the jar daily with fresh solution until all fruit flies are dead.
