Ground squirrels, known for their ability to stand on their hind legs for an extended period of time, are so named because they are largely terrestrial dwellers, although they do periodically climb trees. Once these pests invade your outdoor living space, they are known to tunnel underground causing destruction as they go. Moreover, ground squirrels carry fleas. Getting rid of ground squirrels involves removing existing squirrels and preventing any more from entering your property.
Things You'll Need
Humane traps
Bait (meat or peanut butter)
Blanket
Wire mesh fencing
Cayenne pepper
Garlic juice
Plastic spray bottle
Motion activated sprinklers
Motion activated ultrasonic repellent
Wire mesh
Chimney cap
Set humane traps throughout on your lawn. Bait each of these traps with a piece of meat or a dollop of peanut butter. Once a squirrel has been captured, cover the trap with a blanket and relocate the squirrel to a heavily wooded area that is several miles from your home.
Install wire mesh fencing around any specific areas that you want to keep ground squirrels away from. Such areas may include a garden or a child's outdoor play area. Avoid using plastic barriers as squirrels will just bore through them.
Pick up any garbage and debris from your yard. Cover your outdoor garbage cans and avoid placing your pet's food and water dishes outside. All of these items will attract ground squirrels to you property.
Prepare a mixture of one tbsp. cayenne pepper, two tbsp. garlic juice and half a cup of water. Pour the mixture into a plastic spray bottle and spray this repellent around the perimeter of your home. The squirrels will find the smell of these items offensive and will stay away.
Install motion activated sprinklers or ultrasonic units. These devices will pick up on the squirrels' movement and will either blast out water or emit a high pitched sound to keep the unwanted animals at bay.
Repair any areas on the exterior of your home that squirrels could use as an entrance point. These areas include damaged foundations, siding and roofs. Cover any vents on the roof with wire mesh and place a cap over the chimney.
Tips & Warnings
Consider procuring one or two outdoors cats to chase away squirrels from your yard.
